Flipside Focus Season 2 Episode #3

February 21, 2018

More Indie Comics means more reviews from your favorite Indie Comics Podcast, Flipside Focus! Josh and Al are back with more books to review, and more Indie comics news. Join the guys as they talk about the books that you’ve never heard of but need to read nonetheless.

Make sure to visit the Aspen Comics website as they celebrate 15 years in business! Go Indie!

Books Covered in this episode:

  • Northend by Ryan Ellsworth:  North Bend. It's a crime/sci-fi story about a Seattle DEA agent who is recruited by the CIA to help test an experimental mind control drug on unwitting Americans. The first issue did really well on Kickstarter and was actually chosen as their project of the day out of all current projects running, from any category. We're getting ready & super excited to launch the Kickstarter for issue #2 around the end of February/beginning of March. And it would be awesome to have a review of issue #1 to help promote the Kickstarter either before launch, or while the campaign is running.

  • EElMan Chapters 1-5: Please find attached examples of my Eelman Chronicles comics for submission to be reviewed if you can fit them in. These aren't yet published anywhere other than online PDF's but looking to complete another story or two, plus some supporting pages soon and get a physical book out soon. These are TRUE stories, all hand drawn and written by myself, all about my dad's life, and funny adventures as the last remaining Eel Catcher in the fens of Eastern England. They're very lof-fi, but hopefully that adds to the charm ;) There are LOADS more stories to tell, he's had a funny old time of it over the years, so they'll be more on the way, we have plans for 3-4 collected volumes :) Comics are available at and the Eelman Chronicles are on twitter @eelmanchronicle & @chrisspalton3)

  • KICKSTARTER ALERT: Lyndon White and I’m a freelance illustrator, writer and comic artist in the UK. he has been working on a new concertina book based on Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu. It’ll be launching it on Kickstarter on the 14th March, the anniversary of the Dracula one he did last year.   Kickstarter Link:

  • The Show by Jed McPherson It's about a gonzo reality TV program and the lunatics that create it. Think The Truman Show meets Old Boy with a healthy with Hunter S. Thompson as the showrunner.

  • Softby Diego S is a story about Margaret, a woman who has moved into a new big city to try to find her way in life. In terms of genre, it leans heavily towards slice of life and comedy. It is currently available digitally through ComiXology. By Diego S

  • PanelxPanel is a digital magazine all about looking at comics more as a medium for storytelling. Featuring essays on craft and theme, and process articles from mainstream and indie creators alike, it aims to put the emphasis on the craft of comics-making and visual storytelling. Dave Gibbons called it, "intelligent and informed analysis of the comics storytelling medium itself. The magazine I have been waiting for." Each issue of the magazine is divided in two, with the first half being an interview and features relating to a feature book, this month Image Comics' Twisted Romance (by Alex de Campi, Katie Skelly, Alejandra Gutierrez and more). There's a big feature interview with a large cross-section of the creators on the book, plus essays and craft pieces on anthologies in the western comics market, visual storytelling and a rumination on themes of love and consumption in the stories.  The second half of each issue features unrelated interviews and craft pieces, this month with Ed Piskor on how he's crafting X-Men: Grand Design. We've also got an interview with Greg Rucka on his highs and lows in comics, and why they're an important storytelling medium for him. Ales Kot writes a lengthy process piece about how to craft a story, breaking down scenes and figuring out opening and endings in comics, and Emma Lawson writes about why the ending of Sandman was important to her personally, and the true power of stories. We've also got a short comic, and essays on Big Two storytelling in 2017.  PanelxPanel is available from com every month, and subscriptions are available from the same link. Each issue is ~100 ad-free pages at $2.50, and previous issues have featured Mister Miracle, Redlands, Secret Weapons, Black Bolt and more. The next issue covers Daniel Warren Johnson's Extremity, and is available March 7th. It is edited by Strip Panel Naked's Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou , and has been well-received from numerous industry professionals.
